ADRENAL FATIGUE: RECLAIM YOUR ENERGY AND VIBRANCY WITH SOUND HEALING
“You weren’t the only one working overtime - so were your adrenal glands”
— MICHELE CHEVALLEY HEDGE (THE AUSTRALIAN HEALTHY HORMONE DIET).
Have you been feeling tired and worn out all the time? Despite having enough sleep?
Suffering from brain fog and feeling constantly flat?
Are you tired of being asked, have you gone to the Doctor's? Or... Have you tried this? Have you thought of that?
But you are no closer to a cure to what is plaguing you?
Dubbed the 21st century stress syndrome, Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome is an increasingly common yet controversial diagnosis for the fatiguing consequences of hormone depletion.
It is not a recognized ailment by the medical community due to the lack of scientific testing to verify the condition exists.
However, the symptoms are nonetheless debilitating and add to the stress and disruptions already suffered by the inflicted.
If you have not heard of the term Adrenal Fatigue, then chances are, you are one of the lucky few who have not had to endure the trauma of going through multiple doctors looking for answers to your elusive condition. "There is nothing wrong with you…", "It's all in your head…" are the common frustrating responses sufferers say they get from their physicians.
So what exactly is Adrenal Fatigue?
James L Wilson, Ph.D., a Naturopath, and expert in alternative medicine, coined the term Adrenal Fatigue in 1998. In his book of a similar name, he describes it as a group of related signs and symptoms caused by hormone depletion of overworked adrenal glands.
Dr. Wilson says while there may not be any physical signs of illness, you tend to experience
a feeling of constant tiredness
of feeling "gray," and
fatigue that doesn't get better with sleep
And in many cases, there is also an increased craving for salty or sweet snacks.
He associates the condition with intense stress and states it often follows chronic infections like bronchitis, flu, or pneumonia.
Difference between Addison's Disease and Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome
The adrenal glands sit on top of your kidneys. These small triangular-shaped glands produce cortisol amongst several other hormones necessary for the body to function optimally.
Under stress, the adrenal glands produce and release short bursts of cortisol into the bloodstream. Preparing the body for fight or flight responses. A natural reaction to when the body perceives danger.
Wilson maintains that when your body is in a constant state of fight or flight, the adrenal glands are overworked from the prolonged production of cortisol. Affecting the regulation of metabolism, your blood pressure, and your immune system.
In contrast, Addison's Disease happens when the adrenal glands stop producing hormones due to tissue damage or a problem with the pituitary gland. This is a medically accepted condition diagnosed through blood tests. Addison's disease is usually treated with medications that replace the hormones.
Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome occurs when the adrenal glands don’t produce enough hormones due to prolonged stress. However, the lack of conclusive testing deems it medically non-existent.
Wilson argues that research on this goes back years with Henry Harrower, one of the original editors of The Journal of Endocrinology, addressing low adrenal functioning using terms like hypercortisolism and minor Addison's Disease.
As well, a 2011 Integrative Medicine review showed the correlation between hypercortisolism and numerous diseased states such as fibromyalgia, chronic pain syndromes, mood disorders, autoimmune diseases, malignancies.
Adrenal Fatigue is a syndrome, not a disease, he specifies.
But apart from the controversy, both Addison's disease or Primary Adrenal Insufficiency and the closely related Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome have one thing in common – they tend to be exacerbated by chronic stress.
Chronic Stress and You
Chronic stress is a workplace hazard that impacts both staff and the economy at large. It has racked up losses at around $17bn towards worker's stress-related needs.
In Australia, 43% of workers report suffering from poor mental health due to workplace stress.
That means 2 in 5 make up the busy, overworked, chronically stressed professional.
If your career lies in high-achieving professional categories like law, high-performing sales , and health care work, you may be susceptible to chronic stress. These occupations involve high stakes– million-dollar projects or proceedings or death- which translates to increased anxiety.
Festering chronic stress exhausts the adrenal glands, and the consequential effects are felt over time.
The symptoms of both Addison's Disease and Adrenal Fatigue have some similarities, with the former being more severe. However, they can also mimic other diseases, which most times delays diagnosis.
So if your medical tests results show negative for Addison's Disease yet you manifest symptoms that resemble Adrenal Fatigue, rest assured that the absence of scientific proof for Adrenal Fatigue is not an invalidation of your suffering.
It would be beneficial, instead, to consider restorative therapies for managing and, with time, possibly eliminating the long-term consequences and symptoms.
Left untreated, however, Adrenal Fatigue symptoms are bound to intensify. Bringing significantly more disruptions to your quality of life, your health, your relationships, and your career. The search for effective therapeutic treatments should be the focus.
Additionally, a lowered immune system increases the risk of elevating the syndrome to Addison's disease or Addisonian Crisis where symptoms worsen acutely without warning.
How to know if you are suffering from Adrenal Fatigue
As you know, it can be tricky to get a proper diagnosis for Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome. However, these symptoms are a general guide used by alternative medicine practitioners.
fatigue, particularly upon waking, with intermittent "crashes" throughout the day
poor stress response and mood regulation
cognitive issues or "brain fog"
increased energy levels in the evenings
cravings for salty and sweet foods
overuse of caffeine and other stimulants
a compromised immune system
While less common symptoms are thought to include:
insomnia
frequent urination
loss of muscle tone
poor circulation
depression
weight gain
decreased libido
What can you do to treat Adrenal Fatigue?
Sadly, the lack of pharmaceutical methods to treat Adrenal Fatigue reinforces mainstream medicine's unwillingness to accept the syndrome as a medical condition.
Without regulated prescriptions, alternative medicine professionals and experts emphasize improving your lifestyle with physical and wellbeing building activities as the first step.
